Induction-Hardened Caterpillar Camshafts for C15, 3306 & 3406E Engines

Precision Valve Timing: Heavy-Duty Camshafts for Mining & Construction Machinery

Uncompromising Metallurgy: Camshaft Reliability for Industrial Diesel Power

In the high-torque cycle of a heavy-duty diesel engine, the camshaft dictates the “breathing” efficiency and injector timing. Ruich Value resolves critical maintenance shortages with a wholesale inventory of high-precision Caterpillar Camshafts, designed for mixed industrial fleets. Whether you are replacing a pitted camshaft on a C15 ACERT highway truck or overhauling a legacy 3306 mechanical engine in a D6 dozer, our catalog provides the metallurgical hardness required to resist lobe wear and roller follower damage. Caterpillar engines utilize robust gear-driven camshafts designed for extreme durability. However, extended oil intervals can lead to surface fatigue and lobe flattening. Our replacement assemblies are manufactured from Forged Steel or Chilled Cast Iron, featuring lobes induction hardened to HRC 58-62. This superior surface treatment ensures the cam profile retains its lift specifications even under the extreme contact pressure of unit injector rocker arms.

Buyer’s Guide: Caterpillar Camshaft Architectures

Cam Location Key Engine Models Tech Identification
Overhead Cam (OHC) (Gear Driven) 3406E, C15, C16, C18 Located in the cylinder head. Massive, heavy shafts. Check front gear helical cut angle and nose cone design.
In-Block Cam (Pushrod Type) 3304, 3306, 3406B/C, C9 Traditional design. Actuates valves via pushrods. C9 uses the cam to drive the HEUI pump.
Compact Industrial (Utility Spec) 3066, 3054, C4.4 Often Mitsubishi or Perkins based architectures. Cam gears may be press-fit.

Why Source Caterpillar Camshafts from Ruich Value?

  • Induction Hardening: We treat the cam lobes and journals to a depth that allows for superior wear resistance (HRC 60), protecting against the pitting common in high-mileage C15 engines.
  • Profile Precision: Our cams are ground on CNC Landis machines to exact OEM lift and duration specs, ensuring correct injector timing and valve overlap for optimal combustion.
  • Gear Quality: For gear-driven cams, we ensure the helical gears are precision-machined and heat-treated to mesh perfectly with the crankshaft gear, preventing gear whine and backlash.
  • Journal Finish: Bearing journals are micro-polished to Ra 0.2 or better, ensuring a hydrodynamic oil film is maintained to prevent bearing seizure.
  • Ready Stock: We maintain inventory of fast-moving cams for the 3306 and C15 series, supporting urgent rebuilds for mining and construction equipment.

Technical FAQ: Caterpillar Camshafts

Q1: Why did my C15 camshaft fail (flattened lobes)?

The most common cause is a seized roller on the rocker arm / cam follower. If the roller stops rolling, it slides against the cam lobe, destroying the hardened surface in minutes. We strongly recommend replacing all Rocker Arms or Followers when installing a new cam.

Q2: Are 3406E and C15 camshafts interchangeable?

Not always. While they fit in the same head, the cam profiles (lift and duration) are different to match the different injector flow rates and ECU mapping. Using the wrong cam can cause low power, high EGTs, or check engine codes. Always check the casting number.

Q3: Does the camshaft come with the front gear?

For most large CAT engines (C15/3406), the front gear is a heavy, press-fit component that is often reusable. Our camshafts are typically sold as “Bare Shafts”. If you need the gear installed, please specify this in your request.
