The difference is critical: the 4D30 uses Indirect Injection (IDI) with swirl chambers, while the 4D31/4D31T uses Direct Injection (DI). The ME999863 (4D31) features a flat deck design where the fuel is injected directly into the piston bowl, requiring different port geometries and head gasket profiles. They are not interchangeable.
Heavy hydraulic loading in excavators forces the 4D31T turbo engine to run at high thermal peaks. The thin metal bridge between the valves expands and contracts under this heat.
