The Nissan Patrol ZD30 uses the Garrett GT2052V, which is a Variable Nozzle Turbine (VNT). They have completely different physical footprints, exhaust flanges, and ECU control methods. Always verify OEM 14411-9S000 for the D22 Navara.
The 3.0L ZD30 engine is notoriously sensitive to boost and exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs). If a cheap aftermarket turbo has a stiff or poorly calibrated wastegate actuator, it will overboost. This excess pressure leans out the air-fuel mixture, spiking cylinder temperatures and frequently causing the ZD30’s pistons to crack or melt. If a newly installed HT12-19B starts leaking oil into the intake, immediately check the engine’s crankcase ventilation (PCV) system. ZD30 engines are prone to excessive blow-by as they age. If the PCV is blocked, crankcase pressure rises and physically pushes the oil past the turbo’s hydrodynamic seals. This is an engine issue, not a turbo defect.
Yes, this step is mandatory. When the old turbo fails, it often dumps liters of engine oil into the intercooler and boost piping. If you install a new turbo and start the engine without flushing the intercooler, the engine can suck up this pooled oil and suffer a “diesel runaway”, running at maximum RPM until the engine self-destructs.
Before installing the oil feed line, you must inject fresh, clean engine oil directly into the turbo’s top oil feed port. While doing this, gently spin the compressor wheel by hand. This ensures the bronze journal bearings are fully lubricated. Starting a dry turbo will instantly score the bearings and void the warranty.
