The late-model Nissan Navara D40 and Pathfinder R51 introduced the upgraded 190HP (140kW) version of the YD25 engine. To achieve this high power output and strict emissions compliance, Nissan transitioned from traditional vacuum-actuated turbos to the BorgWarner BV45 series, which utilizes an advanced Electronic Actuator for instantaneous VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbine) adjustments.
While highly efficient, this system presents a major challenge for diesel technicians: when exhaust soot causes the VNT vanes to stick, the electronic actuator struggles to move them. This excessive load often strips the internal gears of the actuator or burns out its motor, throwing the vehicle into an immediate “Limp Mode”. They are completely different and not interchangeable. The earlier 174HP Navara uses a Garrett GT2056V turbo (OEM 14411-EB300) controlled by a vacuum actuator. This 190HP High Power version uses a BorgWarner BV45 (OEM 14411-5X01B) controlled by an Electronic Actuator directly wired to the ECU. Using the wrong turbo will result in immediate ECU failure codes and zero boost.
No. Our aftermarket 14411-5X01B turbos come with the electronic actuator pre-installed and flow-bench calibrated to factory parameters. It is a plug-and-play unit. However, you must use a professional OBD2 diagnostic scanner to clear any existing “Limp Mode” or actuator fault codes stored in the ECU before starting the engine.
Actuator failure is usually a symptom, not the root cause. Over time, excessive soot from the DPF or EGR system builds up inside the turbine housing, causing the VNT vanes to physically jam (carbon-lock). When the electronic actuator tries to force these stuck vanes open, the excessive electrical load burns out the actuator motor or strips its internal plastic gears.
Absolutely. The 190HP YD25 relies heavily on its Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). If the DPF is blocked, exhaust gas cannot escape, creating massive backpressure. This pressure pushes forcefully against the turbine wheel, destroying the turbo’s internal thrust bearings and forcing oil out of the seals. Always verify DPF health when replacing a turbo.
You must replace the oil feed line—never attempt to clean it, as hidden carbon sludge will starve the new journal bearings of oil. You should also replace the oil return line, air filter, and engine oil. Finally, perform a “Bench Prime” by injecting clean oil into the turbo feed port and spinning the wheel by hand before the first engine start.
