Plateau honing is a multi-stage finishing process. After initial honing creates deep cross-hatch grooves for oil retention, a second, finer honing stage removes the sharp “peaks.” This creates a “plateau” surface that allows piston rings to seat almost instantly, dramatically reducing engine break-in time and initial oil consumption. For a heavy-duty engine like the RF8, this ensures immediate, reliable compression.
Absolutely not. New cylinder liners must always be paired with new piston rings. The old rings have worn to the specific pattern of the old, worn liners. Installing them in a new, perfectly round liner will result in poor sealing, excessive blow-by, and will quickly destroy the new liner’s honed surface.
Press-fit liners like these for the RF8 must be installed using a hydraulic press with the correct size installation tool. The engine block is typically heated and the liners are often chilled (e.g., with dry ice) to create a temporary size difference that allows for easier installation. Never hammer a liner into place, as this will distort its shape and cause piston seizure.
Liner protrusion (the height the liner sits above the engine block deck) is critical for head gasket sealing. After installation, you must use a dial indicator and a straight edge across the block deck to measure the protrusion at several points around the liner. It must be within the RF8 engine’s factory service manual specifications to prevent head gasket failure.
Liner glazing occurs when the honed surface becomes polished smooth, losing its ability to hold oil. This is often caused by extended periods of light-load operation or “engine idling.” In a heavy-duty RF8, this leads to increased friction, overheating, and oil consumption.
