The Toyota 1HZ cylinder head (OEM: 11101-17010) is a high-grade cast iron component with an SOHC 12-valve configuration and indirect injection pre-combustion chambers.
It addresses thermal cracking and pre-cup loosening in high-mileage 4.2L diesel engines, fitting Land Cruiser HZJ70/79, Coaster HZB30. Cross ref: AMC 908780.
In stock for global export.
Despite the 1HZ’s reputation as one of Toyota’s most reliable engines, the cylinder head is susceptible to two well-documented failure modes: cracking between the valve bridges and around the pre-combustion chambers, typically caused by severe overheating or prolonged heavy towing; and pre-cup loosening in inferior aftermarket castings where interference fit tolerances are not maintained. These failures manifest as cooling system pressurization, oil in coolant, or in extreme cases, hydro-lock. Our replacement cylinder head features increased material density around the valve bridges and precision-installed pre-combustion chambers with correct interference fit, maintaining the 22.7:1 compression ratio for pre-1998 units and 22.4:1 for 1998-onward models. Fully interchangeable with OEM 11101-17011, 11101-17012, and aftermarket cross-reference AMC 908780, this unit restores the unbreakable durability that Land Cruiser operators depend on in remote operations.

The 1HZ pre-combustion chambers operate under extreme thermal stress, particularly during sustained heavy towing, high ambient temperatures, or aftermarket turbocharging where exhaust gas temperatures can exceed safe limits. In severe cases, the pre-cup can crack completely in half, allowing combustion gases to enter the cooling system and cause rapid pressurization. Symptoms include rising coolant temperature, bubbling in the radiator, and oil in coolant. A single episode of severe overheating can be sufficient to initiate cracking. Our 11101-17010 replacement features increased material density around the pre-cup pockets and precision interference-fit pre-combustion chambers to resist this failure mode.
The 1HZ uses 26 torque-to-yield head bolts (M11x1.25) that must be replaced after each removal. First, tighten all bolts to 69 Nm (51 ft-lb) in the specified sequence. Second, turn all bolts an additional 90 degrees. Third, perform a second 90-degree turn. Always install a new head gasket and verify all pre-combustion chambers are securely seated before final assembly. The 1HZ is an interference engine — a broken timing belt will cause valve-to-piston contact, so inspect the timing belt and tensioner during any head replacement.
Yes, all three part numbers are fully interchangeable OEM cylinder heads for the 1HZ engine. The 11101-17010 is the primary part number, while 11101-17011, 11101-17012, and 11101-17013 represent production batch variations. Aftermarket cross-reference AMC 908780 corresponds to the same casting. All variants fit Land Cruiser 70 Series (HZJ70/75/76/78/79), 80 Series (HZJ80), 105 Series (HZJ105), and Coaster Bus (HZB30) equipped with the 1HZ 4.2L diesel engine. No modifications are required when switching between these part numbers.
In 1998, Toyota introduced significant updates to the 1HZ engine, including a reinforced cylinder block, strengthened crankshaft, new pistons, and revised glow plugs. The compression ratio changed from 22.7:1 to 22.4:1. From 2002 onward, an EGR system was added. However, the cylinder head casting itself remained fundamentally the same across all production years — the same SOHC 12-valve cast iron design with pre-combustion chambers. All cylinder head part numbers (11101-17010 through 11101-17013) fit both pre-1998 and post-1998 engines. When rebuilding, ensure you select the correct piston and gasket set matching the engine’s production year.
The stock 1HZ cast iron cylinder head can tolerate mild turbocharging at low boost pressures (typically up to 7-8 psi), but higher boost levels significantly increase the risk of pre-combustion chamber cracking and valve bridge failure due to elevated exhaust gas temperatures. The 1HZ was designed as a naturally aspirated engine with indirect injection, and its pre-cups were not engineered for the thermal loads of forced induction. If turbocharging is planned, we recommend upgrading to a reinforced cylinder head with thicker pre-cup walls, installing an exhaust gas temperature (EGT) gauge, and using a conservative boost tune to protect the head from thermal fatigue.
