No, while the 1Z, 2Z, and 11Z share similar block architectures, the camshafts are not directly interchangeable. The 1Z uses OEM 13501-78200 (or superseded 13501-78201/78202), which has specific lobe duration and lift tailored for the 3.0L displacement. The 2Z (3.5L) uses a different cam profile to accommodate increased air volume. Always verify your exact engine plate before ordering.
A loud, rhythmic ticking noise from the lower block area usually indicates lifter (tappet) or camshaft lobe wear. Because the 1Z is an OHV engine, worn lobes fail to lift the pushrods adequately, increasing the valve clearance beyond the factory 0.35 mm (cold) specification. If the lobe height measures below 41.50 mm, both the camshaft and the lifters must be replaced simultaneously to prevent immediate re-galling.
Unlike SOHC engines with top bearing caps, the OHV 1Z camshaft is secured inside the block using a front thrust plate. The two retaining bolts for this thrust plate must be torqued to 19 Nm (14 ft·lbf). Before inserting the shaft, thoroughly coat all journals and lobes with high-pressure assembly lube to prevent dry-start scoring during the initial engine break-in period.
