The early-type Toyota 2L cylinder head (OEM: 11101-54050) features the classic SOHC 8V rocker-arm configuration designed for the 2.4L naturally aspirated diesel.
It resolves pre-combustion chamber thermal fatigue and fits pre-1988 Hilux (LN56/LN65) and HiAce (LH51/LH71) fleets. Cross ref: AMC 908700.
In stock for global export.
The primary vulnerability of the early 2L engine is its extremely high 22.2:1 compression ratio combined with aging cooling systems, which frequently induces severe thermal fatigue. This manifests as critical cracking between the intake and exhaust valve seats, as well as radial fractures deep within the pre-combustion chambers. Once cracked, the engine suffers immediate coolant loss, overheating, and loss of compression. Our replacement cylinder head mitigates these inherent design flaws by utilizing a high-density cast iron alloy. This upgraded metallurgy provides superior thermal shock resistance, ensuring that rocker pedestal mounts and pre-cup pockets remain perfectly intact under extreme off-road towing conditions.

The core difference lies in the valvetrain design. The 11101-54050 early 2L head (pre-1988) uses a rocker arm assembly to actuate the valves. The later 2L-II head (post-1988) uses a direct-acting bucket-and-shim configuration over the valves. These cylinder heads are completely incompatible; installing a 2L-II head on an early block will cause severe mechanical failure due to differing oil galleries and valvetrain geometries.
Look for radial hairline cracks originating from the pre-combustion chamber insert and extending outward toward the intake or exhaust valve seats. Due to the high 22.2:1 compression ratio, thermal stress easily fractures weakened castings. If a crack crosses the fire ring perimeter of the head gasket, the cylinder head cannot be resurfaced and must be fully replaced to prevent immediate coolant pressurization.
The standard installation torque for the early 2L cylinder head is 78 Nm, followed by two consecutive 90-degree angle turns. It is imperative to clean all block threads meticulously with a thread chaser (not a cutting tap) and apply clean engine oil to the bolt threads. Always discard stretched bolts and use new TTY (Torque-to-Yield) fasteners to maintain the clamping force required for the high-compression diesel ignition.
No. When rebuilding the 11101-54050 cylinder head, the pre-combustion chambers (pre-cups) must be pressed into the casting first. Afterward, a machine shop must surface the entire deck to ensure the pre-cups are perfectly flush with the cast iron surface. Installing pre-cups into an already surfaced head often leads to uneven heights, which will quickly destroy the head gasket fire ring.
